CH. Major Jonathon Maltbie, Gentleman, b. July 26, 1698, Branford, son of William and Abigail (Bishop) Maltby. His birth is recorded in the handwriting of his father. (Branford Rec., Vol. II). He was bapt. the same month. (Branford Church Rec. in M.S.).

(New Haven Probate Rec., Vol. III, p. 235)

In Oct. 1710, Daniel Maltbie, half-brother of Jonathon, was

"appointed guardian to Jonathon Maltbie, minor son of Wm. Maltbie of Branford, deceased." Jonathon at this time was twelve years old. Daniel was guardian for not more than two years, as we then find "Jonathon Maultbie, Minor, choose Mr. Edward Barker of Branford to be his guardian." (New Haven Probate Rec., Vol. I (?) p. 66).

(County Court Rec. New Haven, Vol. III, p. 101).

"Jan. 1718-19. License was granted to Jonathon Maltbie of Branford to practice the art and mystery of a tanner."

"Sept. 25, 1719. Jonathon Maltbie married Mrs. Sarah POTTER at Stamford, Conn. They were married by the Rev. John Davenport." Note. This would be Rev. John Davenport, d. 1731, whose 2nd wife was Elizabeth Morris, widow of William (2) Maltby. William Maltby and Elizabeth Morris had a son, Capt. William Maltby who mar. Sarah Davenport, b. 1702. She was daughter of the Rev. John Davenport and his first wife, Martha Gould, widow of John Selleck.

The Davenport Gen., p. 203, includes a reproduction of the old Davenport home on Elm Street, New Haven. Little is left of the original home, with the exception of the cellar, in which the ?egiside Judges were concealed. I have read that the original mansion contained thirteen fireplaces.

The maiden name of Sarah--widow of Potter is not known, nor is it known where she married him. Possibly he descended from William and wife Frances Potter, as they had a daughter Sarah Potter of Branford, who mar. Robert Foote of Branford in 1659.

(Branford Rec. Vol. IV, p. 399).

"Oct. 26, 1719. Jonathan and Samuel Maltbie divide the land given them by their father."

(p. 197). Oct. 26, 1719. Deed of Samuel and Jonathan Maltbie of Branford, to their half-brother, Daniel Maltbie, of their right and interest in Beacon Swamp. (See under Daniel Maltbie).

Presumably Jonathon Maltbie resided in Branford in the "mansion" left him in his father's will, until about 1720, for: (Branford Rec. Vol. IV, p. 446) "Dec. 7, 1722. Deed. Jonathon Maltbie of Stamford, (Conn.) gentleman, gives land to Edward Barker in Branford."

Note. At this time Jonathan was only twenty four years old, yet he calls himself "gentleman." In April of 1722 he is called "cordwainer," and in Jan. 1718-19, we had the record where he was licensed to practice the "art and mystery of a tanner."

(Branford Rec. Vol. IV, p. 426). April 16, 1722. "Jonathon Maltbie of Stamford, cordwainer, sells Samuel Maltbie of Branford, 2 acres and 3 rods of land in Branford, for # 10.

(p. 445). Dec. 7, 1722. Deed. "Jonathon Maltbie of Stamford, cordwainer, for # 130 gives his brother, Daniel Maltbie of Branford, 10 Acres of land, being Jonathon's share of the home lot, given him by his father."

(p. 478). "Mar. 25, 1723. Jonathon Maltbie of Stamford, gentleman, for # 38-10s., gives his brother, Samuel Maltbie, of Branford, his interest in Cow pasture, 16 1/2 acres."

At the beginning of 1728, he served as townsman, or selectman, for twenty years and at this time was called "Major Maltbie." Notes from "Rev. E. B. Huntington's Hist. of Stamford."

"Jonathon Maltbie was Captain of Company Two, and on his resignation,

about 1755, Ebenezer Wood was chosen Captain." Huntington also states:

"Among the town notables of that day, 1746, were Col. Jonathon Hoyt, Captain Jonathon Maltbie and Mr. Abraham Davenport." Records of the First Church of Stamford, begin Jan. 1, 1747, and contain the name of "Jonathon Maltbie, Esqre." Stamford Records give the marriage of John Davenport, b. 1729, who married in 1748 Deborah Ambler. They were married by "Jonathon Maltbie, Esq. one of his Majesty's Justices for the County of Fairfield." According to Huntington, Jonathon Maltbie "attained the rank of Colonel." Unfortunately Huntington has given part of this Military record to Jonathon's son, Jonathon (3) who was born in 1720 and died in 1745.

Major Jonathon's will is dated Sept. 19, 1767. His sword is owned by a lineal descendant, Mrs. Samuel B. Doggett of Wiscasset, Maine, a photograph of which is in the possession of the compiler. "The sword would date back to about 1752."

Abstract of will of Jonathon Maltbie of Stamford in Fairfield County.

Imprimis I bequeath unto my Loving Grandson, Jonathon Maltbie, the Son of my Dec'd Son Jonathon Maltbie, of my Estate to the value of 35, etc.

The Remainder of my Estate, both Real and personal, to my Loving and Beloved wife, Sarah Maltbie, to her and her heirs forever.

The reason I Do not in this my will give any of my Estate to any of my children, or to the Children of my Dec'd son David, is not because I have forgot them or have not a Suitable Regard for them, but the Reason is this:

I have already advanced for my said Dec'd Son and my children which are Living and given to them as Portion as much of my Estate as the Circumstances thereof will admit of, and if my said wife Shall not have occasion to Improve and Spend all that is above given her (She being the mother of all my said Children) I leave it with her to dispose of it among them as She Shall think Proper.

I appoint my Loving wife, Sarah Maltbie Sole Executrix. . .I have hereunto Set my hand and Seal the 19th Day of Sept. A.D. 1767.

                                         Jonathon Maltbie

Signed, Sealed published and pronounced and

Declared by Jonth. Maltbie, Esq, the testator to be his last will and testament in the presence of

     Abrm. Davenport
     Peter Demilll
     Daniel Loder"
(Stamford Probate Rec. Vol. III, p. 291).
The will of Jonathon's wife, Sarah Maltbie, widow, is on Stamford
Probate Records, Vol. III, p. 408.

Abstract of will of Sarah Maltbie of Stamford in Fairfield Co., Conn. Colony.

Imprimis. My wearing apparel, unto my three Daughters, viz: Abigail Squire, Mary Waterbury and Hannah Buckley to be equally divided among them.

Remainder of my Estate I give unto my two living Daughters, viz: Abigail Squire and Mary Waterbury to be Equally Divided between them. The reason I do not give my Daughter Hannah an Equal share with her Sisters is not for want of an Equal affection to her but because my Dec'd Son James hath given her such a Legacy that I have not enough to make her Sisters Equal with her, and the Reason I do not give some part of my

Estate to the children of my Dear Son David Maltbie is not for want of a suitable affection for them but because my Dec'd Husband gave to their Dec'd Father, more than an Equal share of his Estate. I appoint my Loving and Trusting Son-in-law, Major David Waterbury Sole Executor. . . .

I have hereunto set my hand and seal the 24th day of April, A.D.
1770. her
                              Sarah (+) Maltbie
                                    mark.
Witnesses: Peter Demill
           Ann Demill
           Joseph Demill

(Mrs. Maltbie calls herself "aged and feeble" which probably accounts for her making her mark).

It will be noticed that Peter Demill witnesses both these wills while Sarah's will is also witnessed by Ann and Joseph Demill. Is it possible that Sarah was a Demill, or related to this family? The following is interesting in the circumstances: "Anthony de Mille, b. in Holland. Died in New Amsterdam (New York). He mar. Elizabeth van der Liphorst. Their son, Peter deMille, was born in 1661, and died in 1722, high sheriff of New York, 1700-1. He m. Marritje van der Heul, b. 1664, dau. of Abraham Joman and Tyntie Hendrickes, dau. of Hendrick Hendrickson Kip. Pieter deMille had a son Peter deMille, b. 1700; died 1774. He mar. Abigail Banks." (American Compendium, p. 636.)

Stamford is half way between New Haven and New York. This branch of the family used the French form "of" or "de." The Dutch form is "van der Moulen (of the Mill). Sir Peter Weuters van der Moulen was of Amsterdam, and knighted for distinguished service in the improvement of dykes and canals. His eldest son was Peter van Moulen, who came to America about 1650. In Colonial records it is stated that his name was changed to the English form of Peter Mills. He had a lot at Haddam, Conn. before 1669. (Vol. IV. Conn. Genealogies).

The Maltbie wills were copied at Stamford by Miss Ethel Lord Scofield, who, unfortunately, had not time to copy the inventories.

Their graves have not been located.
